Inexperience, absent-mindedness and even arrogance can be the cause of several errors and less constructive attitudes with our environment during birdwatching. I’m not an exception and more than once I have found myself there, so in order to remember I thought it would be a good idea to write about them…

Wake up your Senses

Most of the people live with sleepy senses and don’t care about the wildlife in their dairy environment. Pay just a little bit of attention: looking and listening can reveal the presence of lots of birds in our surroundings, in the countryside or in the city.

Write down your Sightings

We usually are confident that our memory will remember our bird sightings, but it’s easy to forget in a short time, especially the details. It’s worth writing down every interesting thing in the moment (don’t leave it for later when you are home; most certainly you will not remember all the details!).

Share the Information

The information kept in your notebook is as if it did not exist. Share it in publications or through the Internet; it’s the only way that this data will be worth its real value.

Go Out

A lot of birdwatchers complain about the difficulty of watching some bird species and they don’t hide the envy they have for those who get to see them. The secret is to spend hours and hours in the field, the more the better… sooner or later you will be pleasantly surprised! Practice and experience will improve your skills to be better at detecting and identifying different species.

Choose the Less Rare

Cuando vemos un ave no muy bien muchas veces nos emocionamos y tendemos a apostar por la especie más rara. No es de extrañar esta actitud ya que a todos nos gusta ver cosas inusuales y especiales. Sin embargo la prudencia debe When we see a bird, but we cannot see it very well, we sometimes we get excited about the possibility of a having spotted a rarity. This reaction is not uncommon, we all like to find special and unussual birds. But it’s more prudent to consider first the commoner and less rare option. More tan once something that appear to be X (a rarity) it was Y (a common species).

Try Not to Disturb the Birds

Any action made by us that changes the behaviour of a bird is a disturbance, and we should try to avoid it. Sometimes they happen with no intention (for example, when we find them suddenly), but in other occasions there’s a reckless attitude by the birdwatcher (for example, getting excessively close while trying to get a better view of the bird), which is reprehensible. Learn about the limits of observing the behaviour of the bird you are looking at.

Always Take your Bird Guide With You

Experienced birdwatchers sometimes have the bad habit of showing off our good knowledge on all the bird species, but the reality is that it is simply impossible to know everything about all of them, so regularly we come across new doubts and identification challenges. Taking a bird guide with us can help us at an unexpected moment, but also it can help us to learn more and more.

Take Your Time

Birdwatching needs patience, a lot of patience! While birdwatching the birds don’t always show themselves, Learning about them is a slow process that requires some effort.

Never Pass in Front of a Birdwatcher

Many times, without realizing, we cross in front of a birdwatcher looking through their binoculars or telescope… you will soon notice that this is something that you should never do because you can disturb him or her, and sometimes it can cause the loss of the target.

Learn the Songs and Calls

Birds can be identified by the sounds they make, so knowing them increases your ability to detect new species. Many birds are shy and don’t show themselves easily. If you know the songs and calls, your chances of detecting and identifying them will be five times higher.

Don’t Despair

It is not always possible to always identify all the birds for many reasons: lack of knowledge of the birdwatcher, not being able to see the bird wellm or simply because science doesn’t have the criteria to distinguish it (this happens more tan expected). Even the experts can have difficulties with the identification of several birds, so don’t worry if you can’t identify some of the birds you see.
